Bobotie Cottage Pie

I found a recipe for Bobotie Pie in an old 1970’s Cookbook. I’d never heard of it before, so I did a bit of research and found out that it’s a South African dish. It’s traditionally topped with an egg and milk mixture that sets to form a savoury custard (a bit like a Moussaka) but in my adaptation I’ve topped it with mashed potato instead. I also included a grated carrot with the mash and added a generous handful of cheddar and a couple of eggs. I also added some veg to the mince to bulk it out and to make sure the kids get their 5 a day! (I find they’re more likely to eat their veg when it’s incorporated into the dish!)

I was a bit sceptical about it but it was delicious, the kids absolutely loved it and have renamed it curry cottage pie. I’ve already been asked for it again, so it must be a hit! 500g of mince will make 2 decent sized¬†pies to feed 4, so 8 servings in total.¬†
