Kitchen Equipment – Starter Kit Essentials

Kitchen Equipment – Starter Kit Essentials

When I started thinking about this blog I thought it might be helpful to make up a list of essential kitchen items you need to start cooking from scratch.

A lot of the items I have in my kitchen are second hand.  I’ve picked them up from car boot sales, charity shops and jumble sales.  It’s a really cheap way to get the equipment that you need as most of what I have has only cost me a few pence or pounds.  For example the 1970’s electric hand whisk that I’ve had for years only cost me 50p from a car boot sale.

Ok, so what do you need…

Kitchen Prep Items

  • A large chef’s knife, a serrated bread knife and a small paring knife
  • 2 chopping boards (in case you need to prepare meat and veg.)
  • A box grater (Poundland sell these)
  • Veg peeler

Cooking items

  • At least 3 saucepans.  It really doesn’t matter if they match
  • Humongous great big saucepan, the biggest one you can find so you can do batch cooking. I’ve now got an aluminium catering size one that I picked up from a car boot sale but prior to buying that I used a pressure cooker pan (again that I got from the car boot sale).
  • Wooden spoons and spatulas
  • Colander

Kitchen Utensils

  • Slotted turner or fish slice
  • Potato masher
  • Large spoon
  • Ladle
